Emergency food calculator
Work out how much emergency food your household needs in calories, with a sample shopping list from everyday long-life food.
SupKit plans on 2,250 calories a day for an adult, 1,600 calories for a child and 1,100 calories for a toddler.1 Two adults and two children need about 23,100 calories for 3 days.
The assumptions
Each person's daily energy comes from their age band, the same figures the SupKit app uses.
| Who | A day |
|---|---|
| Toddler | 1,100 calories |
| Child | 1,600 calories |
| Teenager | 2,400 calories |
| Adult | 2,250 calories |
| Older adult | 2,000 calories |
Babies are planned separately: their milk and food go on the checklist as feeding supplies.

Allergies, dietary needs and children
Plan around everyone at home: allergies, intolerances and diets come first, and familiar food matters most for children. Recipes vary between brands, so always read the label of the product you buy.
- Irish (EU) law names 14 allergens: gluten cereals, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, tree nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphites, lupin and molluscs.2
- On packaged food, allergens must stand out in the ingredient list, for example through font, style or background colour.3
- For unpackaged food, allergen information must be in writing and easy to find before you buy.2
- 'May contain' warnings are optional, used only where cross-contamination can't be ruled out, and can't replace good manufacturing practice.3
